Talking with Your Doctor

Good Questions Lead to Greater Care

Preparing for a conversation with your child’s pediatrician?

In most cases, the pediatrician will be your first point of contact. However, they’ll likely refer you to a pediatric endocrinologist
(ped endo) once they determine specialized care may be required. Knowing which questions to ask once you get in the office can help expedite the process and get your child on the path to treatment sooner.

Questions to Ask Your Doctor

Before Diagnosis

  • What is the difference between central precocious puberty
(CPP) and other types of early puberty?
  • I noticed my child has X, Y, and Z — do you think my child has early puberty?
  • Should I consider speaking to a pediatric endocrinologist (ped endo)?
  • How can we best prepare our child for the testing process? Is there anything we should bring?
  • Could these symptoms be caused by anything else?
  • How should I talk to my child about this?
  • Is there a pediatric endocrinologist you can recommend?

After Diagnosis

  • What are the different treatment options available, and what are the pros and cons of each?
  • Now that my child is diagnosed, what should the primary goals of treatment be for them?
  • What are the potential short-term and long-term side effects of the recommended treatment?
  • How will we monitor the treatment's effectiveness, and how often will we need follow-up appointments?
  • How long can we expect our child to be on this treatment plan?
  • What happens when the treatment is eventually stopped?
  • Do you have any resources or support groups you recommend for families navigating CPP?
